10 Rules of Engagement for HS RECON

  1. Don’t be that cheesy recruiter!  Be yourself.
  2. Smile and relax
  3. Engage everyone
    1. Everyone is useful until proven otherwise
    2. Everyone has a piece to the puzzle
  4. You only get one chance to make a first impression…it better be a good one
  5. Take the time to necessary
    1. Listen
    2. Don’t interrupt
  6. Make notes of everything
    1. People, places, patterns, peculiarities
  7. Respect all people, signs and policies
    1. If the sign says not parking or no tabaco, obey it.
  8. Be humble and don’t talk about yourself
    1. It is better to ask than assume
    2. It is better to ask even if you already know
  9. Refer to the high school and students as, “Your school and your students.”
  10. Ask good questions, ask good questions, ask good questions!!!!

    2. I parked in _________ parking lot.  Is there a more appropriate place to park?
    3. I am gathering information on the procedure for military representatives visiting your school.  Who do you recommend I talk to?  Do you recommend an appointment?
    4. If I wanted to introduce myself to the principal, who would I coordinate that with?  Do you recommend setting up an appointment with that POC?
    5. Can you give me any other advice as a new ARNG liaison in your school?
    6. Do you know anyone in the ARNG?
    7. What do you think about the military as an option for young people?

    5. I was trying to understand your block scheduling.  Can you explain the EDGE program and the A & E Program?
    6. I noticed that there were advertising opportunities on the Bulldog Athletics website.  Who do you think I should talk to about putting an ad on there?
    7. One of the first requests from the Arkansas Military Department is for me to secure a high school list.  Who do you recommend I contact to get that list?
    8. Do you know anyone in the ARNG?
    9. What do you think about the military as an option for young people?
